How does an electric moped subscription work in London?

An electric moped subscription lets a London commuter rent their own e-moped on a flexible monthly basis instead of buying one or relying on public transport. A Moon Fleets e-moped is £179 per month (£279–£289 for the faster models) and includes third-party insurance, free servicing, GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock. It renews monthly from a one-month minimum up to the 84-day maximum hire period, and you can end it with one week’s notice before any renewal.

You choose a vehicle (the Askoll eS3 or Vmoto VS2 Citi electric mopeds, both of which need a CBT, or the CYCL Carr-e cargo e-bike, which needs no licence), book a pickup at the West London store, and ride away the same day. Every Moon Fleets vehicle is fully electric and ULEZ-exempt across Greater London, 24/7. Moon Fleets is a brand of Otto Scooter Ltd, which has operated electric two-wheelers in London since 2019.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked

Do I need a licence to ride a Moon Fleets moped?
You must be 18 or over to subscribe. To ride an electric moped you need either a full motorcycle licence or a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate valid for UK roads. A CBT is a one-day course valid for two years — book one with any accredited motorcycle training school. If you don’t have a CBT yet, the CYCL Carr-e electric cargo bike requires no licence.
Is servicing included?
Yes. Standard maintenance every 2,500 miles is included, along with consumable parts replaced during each service.
Is insurance included?
Yes for the mopeds: third-party motor insurance is included in every moped rental at no separate charge — you ride as a permitted driver on our fleet policy, with cover for social, domestic, pleasure and commuting use (travel to and from a permanent place of work or study). It covers your liability to other people and their property; it does not cover damage to the moped itself or your own injuries. The cargo e-bikes are EAPCs, which by law need no insurance. On every vehicle, optional Damage & Excess Protection is available at £20/month.
What happens if the moped is stolen?
Notify the police immediately, then contact us — every moped is GPS-tracked and we handle recovery in-house. Without Damage & Excess Protection you are liable for loss, theft or damage up to a £1,000 excess; with it (£20/month) that is capped at £50. Damage & Excess Protection is a contractual waiver, not an insurance policy — and it does not apply where there is rider abuse, negligence, breach of the rental agreement, use by an unauthorised person, or where the battery and charger are not returned after a theft.
Do I have to pay the ULEZ charge?
No. All Moon Fleets vehicles are fully electric and exempt from the ULEZ charge across Greater London, 24/7.
Can I park an electric moped for free in London?
Electric mopeds can use motorcycle bays across London, many of which are free or low-cost depending on the borough. We recommend a dedicated parking app to find legal spots near you.
Can I share my moped with someone else?
Yes — you can share the vehicle with another person, provided they complete a document check and are approved by us beforehand. The person who signs the contract remains fully responsible and liable for the moped at all times, whoever is riding it.
Can I ride with a passenger?
No. Pillion passengers are not permitted on Moon Fleets vehicles under any circumstances.
Is Moon Fleets available outside London?
Collection, servicing and support are London-only, from our West London base. Once you have the vehicle you may ride it anywhere in England, Wales and Scotland; taking it anywhere else needs our written consent first.
Can I use a Moon Fleets moped for delivery work?
No. Moon Fleets is a commuter product — hire & reward use, including food or parcel delivery, is not permitted, and neither is racing, track or off-road riding. Commuting to a permanent place of work or study is fully covered by the included insurance. If you deliver for a living, our sister brand Otto Scooter rents delivery mopeds with hire-and-reward insurance.
Can I cancel any time?
The minimum term is one month; after that your subscription renews monthly, up to the maximum hire period of 84 days. You can end it at any monthly renewal by giving one week’s notice before your renewal date, by email to support@ottoscooter.co.uk.
