Electric moped insurance explained

Is insurance included with an electric moped subscription?

Yes. Every Moon Fleets moped subscription includes third-party motor insurance at no separate charge — you ride as a permitted driver under our fleet motor insurance policy, covered for social, domestic, pleasure and commuting use (travel to and from a permanent place of work or study). There’s nothing separate to arrange. Optional Damage & Excess Protection is available on top at £20/month.

This is different from buying a moped, where you arrange and pay for your own policy. With a subscription, third-party insurance is bundled into the one monthly price alongside servicing, GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock.

What does third-party insurance cover?

Third-party insurance covers your liability for injury or damage you cause to other people or their property — the legal minimum required by the Road Traffic Act 1988. It does not, on its own, cover damage to the vehicle itself or your own injuries.

That’s why Moon Fleets offers optional Damage & Excess Protection on top, at £20 per month. It is a contractual waiver, not an insurance policy: if you take it, we won’t charge you more than £50 for accidental damage to or theft of the vehicle — instead of the standard £1,000 excess — and we take a £50 deposit matching that excess. The waiver never applies where there is rider abuse, negligence, breach of the rental agreement, use by an unauthorised person, or where batteries and chargers are not returned after a theft.

What happens if it’s stolen — GPS and your responsibility?

Every vehicle includes GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock. If a vehicle is stolen, you must notify the police immediately; Moon Fleets then uses the GPS to help recover it, and handles claims in-house.

Note that the person who signs the subscription remains responsible for the vehicle at all times, regardless of who is using it — so keep it locked and don’t lend it without thinking.

Frequently asked

Do I need my own insurance?
No — third-party motor insurance is included in every Moon Fleets moped subscription; you ride as a permitted driver on our fleet policy. Optional Damage & Excess Protection (£20/month) is available on top.
Does it cover theft of the moped?
Third-party insurance does not. Optional Damage & Excess Protection — a waiver, not insurance — caps what you pay for theft or damage at a £50 excess, instead of the standard £1,000. Every vehicle also has GPS tracking and an anti-theft lock.
Is the insurance valid for delivery work?
Moon Fleets is a commuter service. If you deliver for a living you need hire-and-reward cover — our sister brand Otto Scooter provides that.
